The Scams That Are Targeting Your Community Right Now
OTP Fraud
A caller identifies themselves as a bank employee, a BSNL representative, or a government official. They say there's a problem with your account, your SIM, or your Aadhaar. They ask for the OTP that 'just arrived' on your phone. If you share it, your account is emptied within minutes. This scam has taken money from teachers, retired government employees, shopkeepers — people who are careful and intelligent.
UPI and 'Receive Money' Fraud
You're told you'll receive a refund or a prize. The scammer sends you a 'receive money' request that looks like a payment. You enter your PIN to 'receive' the money — but you've actually authorised a payment out. The money leaves your account instead of arriving.
Fake Government Messages
WhatsApp messages claiming to be from the government about Aadhaar suspension, electricity disconnection, or income tax notices. They include official-looking logos and urgent language designed to make you act without thinking. Clicking links in these messages can install malware on your phone or steal your credentials.
Children's Online Safety
Children with smartphones are exposed to inappropriate content, online predators, and gaming or social media platforms that use psychological tricks to maximise their time and — increasingly — spend their parents' money. Most parents don't know this is happening because they don't know what to look for.
Why 'Just Be Careful' Is Not Enough
The standard advice is 'don't share your OTP' and 'don't click suspicious links.' This advice is inadequate because it assumes people can always identify what's suspicious.
